The “Banking Concept” of Education and Capitalism

Square

The quote by Fromm stood out to me: “The necrophilous person can relate to an object…only if he possesses it; hence a threat to his possession is a threat to himself… He loves control…” This excerpt could just as easily be used to describe a capitalist, or the kind of person capitalism creates and rewards. The materialism, the treatment of human beings as objects, and the love of control are all characteristics of capitalism as well as “banking concept” school systems. Perhaps school is where capitalism is perpetuated the most? To liberate ourselves from a controlling, dehumanizing school system, we might need to tackle capitalist ideals.

  1. Wow, I wasn’t even aware of how capitalism existed in the school until now. I’m impressed by how you dissected and explained the school system’s examples of capitalism in your paragraph.
