America’s approach to education has been totally engulfed by the capitalist structure that has run rampant since the creation of our country. This “free market” has introduced what Former President Barack Obama stated as the, “defining challenge of our time” in income inequality. Additionally, Obama claimed that this inequality acted as a direct threat to the very democracy that has made America the country it is today. Education should function as a ladder to success, available to all economic backgrounds. However, as capitalism has advanced, education has been forced to adapt to the structure in order to survive and compete in our so-called “free market.” Obama brought our education into a national scope and pushed for funding and broader access to education for the 46 million Americans who still live in poverty. 400 citizens enjoy more than half of the wealth in our country. While funding for education has been increasing, its not enough. People need to have access to at least a form of higher education no matter their background. It isn’t fair to American populations who came to this country with no economic base to prevent them from becoming successful. It shouldn’t cost more money to be “qualified” with a degree to make a decent living.
