“The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education” Reflection

Square

One thing that really stood out to to me in regards to Freires discussion of “The Banking Concept” is he seemed to insinuate that the students were empty vessels before coming into the classroom. I really disagree with that because students come into the classroom with experiences; they are not completely empty. It doesn’t really matter if those experiences relate back to the topic at hand directly or not. I would rather use the metaphor that students are gardens and the teacher is watering them to make them grow from what they already have growing. The passivity of the metaphor of filling an empty vessel does not properly represent what a teacher- student relationship should be like, even though teacher- student relationships today may be more passive than we would like them to be.
