Gender Performance

I think it is reasonable to agree with all of Butler’s points about gender being a performance. If one is to be male, what does that mean? and if one is to be female does that mean her performance is to always be dominated by a male? I like to think that to fix the gender problem the performance should be individual, and gender should not be so fixed. If the lesson is to be true to yourself this way, it would also make sense to be true to others who may perform something to society completely different than your own performance. Maybe acceptance should be the normalized behavior and the discourse should be our judgements.

  1. It’s all so philosophical, isn’t it? Who created the words, “boy”, “girl”, “gender”? There’s no way of changing how things are now, but I think Judith started a huge movement in understanding sexuality and how deeply discourse plays a part in it all. All of this also makes me question why it was decided that males are the “dominant” gender like you pointed out. If it wasn’t for the societal roles that our culture feeds on, it might have turned out differently.
