“Gender Trouble” Language

Some of the language used “Gender Trouble”really stuck out to me and how it touched on LGBTQ+ language. Studying linguistics has really opened my eyes as to how even the words we use or our tone of voice effect our ideas towards someone. This is evident in the language we use when talking about the LGBTQ+ community. Butler touched on this in this reading when talking about the fear of coming out or “becoming gay”. This type of language can negatively effect the general ideas of the LGBTQ+ community because it opens the door for other words or phrases that are inconsiderate. It is all about having an open mind and being willing to learn about the LGBTQ+ community and what may or may not be okay to say. Some people are just ignorant and won’t learn and we cannot change that, but educating just one more person about what language is okay to use is the way to start a change.

  1. I 100 percent agree with this sentiment. I think it is just respect in general to use words and phrases that everyone in a room is comfortable with. It is the golden rule after all. So many people are focused on themselves that they do not recognize the need to use proper phrases and identifiers for others.
