{"id":145,"date":"2019-02-11T22:28:02","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T22:28:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eng296.digitalwcu.org\/WeeklyWriting\/?p=145"},"modified":"2019-02-11T22:29:03","modified_gmt":"2019-02-11T22:29:03","slug":"lesbian-feminist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eng296.digitalwcu.org\/WeeklyWriting\/uncategorized\/lesbian-feminist\/","title":{"rendered":"The Lesbian and the Feminist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judith Butler states, in the bottom portion of page 10, that \u201c<em>Gender Trouble<\/em> sought to refuse the notion that lesbian practice instantiates feminist theory, and set up a more troubled relation between the two terms.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She further states that \u201clesbianism is not the erotic consummation of a set of political beliefs,\u201d where she is referring to feminism, as a vast series of beliefs. These statements seem to call attention to what was an issue at the time of their writing, and what continues to be an active misconception, in the modern day. This is a fascinating topic, as it boils down to subconscious social reasoning that expands beyond just lesbianism and feminism, or sexuality and belief. But, regarding this specific instance, there is a tendency for \u201clesbian,\u201d as an identity, to be innately tied to the assumption that one <em>surely<\/em> must self-identify with strong feminist beliefs. Often, this spans into various other presumed beliefs, political and philosophical, solely on the basis of an individual\u2019s sexual orientation. There is certainly a norm (as a large portion of lesbians <em>do<\/em> identify with some form of feminism), but these descriptors (\u201clesbian\u201d and \u201cfeminist\u201d) are not intrinsically linked; assuming as such often leads to an idea that lesbians \u201cchoose\u201d their orientation, as it is seen as a \u201cproduct\u201d of one\u2019s feminist beliefs.
